My day

posted Fri, 26 Jun 2009 18:19:00 GMT by Jonas Bengtsson

Woke up. Michael Jackson is dead they said. Poor thing, the London concerts got too much I thought. Cardiac arrest they said. Cue the conspiracy theories I thought.

Cycled to the train station, went to Copenhagen for Reboot. Late arrival, which I attribute to my vacation mode and train problems. Got to see a presentation from the Pirate Party about copyright and related issues (sometimes overly preachy and verging on childish, but some good points), and another one about open source projects.

Had to leave to pick up my Copenhagian contract for my new job. 30 min bus ride the web site said. A few minutes in I couldn’t stand my nascent migraine. Looked at the map on my phone, found a park nearby, got off the bus. The HR person was willing to send the contract via e-mail. I rejoiced, or would if could. It was a brilliant day, which is not the best for light-allergic migrainy eyes, but thanks to the GPS in my phone I managed to navigate the few blocks to the park. How people found things before the GPS is a mystery. Must have stayed at home.

In the park I tried to cool down and sleep the migraine off. The park was Søndermarken. Lars Winnerbäck – Söndermarken is an excellent tune, so I had great hopes for the park’s healing power. Slept, or dozed, is the windy park. Had a banana, couldn’t keep the banana, dozed some more. After a few hours two tiny dogs thought I’d had enough and came over to let me know. One started chewing on my headphones. I agreed with them and headed back to the conference, a bit better but still miserable.

Back at the venue, I collected my oily jacket (bikes can do that if you’re not careful, it’s in their nature) and hesitantly accepted I would have to miss out on the rest of the day. Which was a shame since there were some interesting looking items on the schedule, not to mention the Reboot dinner. But my one and only head had had enough.

Train back to Malmö. The AC and smooth ride were pure medicine. Cycle back from station. The contract was in my inbox, and I was relieved. Contracts can be a boring read, but are good to have at times. Got a call about my mountain bike. Went to pick it up. Apparently you needed soap, compressed air, and steady nerves to make the tyre fit the rim properly. Who would have thought? The soap-and-compressed-air-guy opens his shop at 2pm and shuts it at 6pm. I told him it was a brilliant idea, he concurred, senior citizens don’t.

Armed with a properly working bike and lack of migraine I had to go for a ride. The bike rode perfectly and the sun was shining. I had some ice cream, probably my first Daim cone of the year, at least that’s how it tasted. In all it weighed up my miserable day a bit.
